MegaRace is a vehicular combat racing game created by Cryo Interactive. Originally released in 1994, MegaRace is now regarded as one of the most classic arcade racing titles of all time. It features pre-rendered 3-D graphics and functions as a pseudo-3D "rail shooter". The speedway is actually a pre-rendered full-motion video (FMV) playing on a loop, the player controls the speed of the aforementioned loop.

MegaRace also features over twenty minutes of full-motion video starring fictional game show host, Lance Boyle (played by actor, Christian Erickson, of "Hitman" fame). The original MegaRace is regarded as a pioneer in the modern combat racing genre and was, at the time, considered a technical marvel and showcase title for then, state of the art, FMV technology.

A great 90's style arcade racing game which will take you back to the glory days. Love the race style and the host in it really sets the mood.
Megarace was a good part of my childhood. To this day I still have the original CD and enjoy booting up the game from time to time. So what is Megarace? It's an on-rails combat racing game that came out in the early 90's. In Megarace, you take the role of The Enforcer, a contestant in the eponymous game show hosted by Lance Boyle (portrayed by Christian Erickson) on VWBT (Virtual World Broadcast Television). The goal in Megarace is to take out a series of speed gangsters on each of the tracks BEFORE you complete all three laps. Failure to take out all gangsters by the end of the race, or being destroyed yourself, results in a game over (with some special exceptions). You get a small selection of cars to choose from at the start of the game, but after you take out a gang for the first time, you unlock their cars to use (and you select your racing vehicle before the start of each race). Each car has their own attributes, with some having better handling, others having better defenses, and some having more powerful weapons. Each car can use a front gun to take out enemy speed gangs, but have limited ammunition (this can be replenished or depleted throughout the race). Throughout the race, you'll run over a series of symbols on the tracks. These can have varying effects such as speed boosts, forced brakes, adding/depleting gun ammunition, stripping you of your weapons altogether, granting you shields, and giving/deducting points. After the end of the final race track, you'll restart the game from the beginning on hard diffusivity (assuming you started on normal/novice), and once you win a second time, you'll get a leader board to enter your name into. Since this is an old-school game, however, these aren't online leader boards. In-between each race, you'll get some witty commentary from Lance Boyle, and often get a series of comical prizes (such as an invitation to spend an evening out with yourself with all expenses paid by Y-O-U, a dolphin dentist, etc.). These don't actually affect anything, but are a nice in-between for comic relief. The controls in the game can be a bit stiff at times, but overall the cars handle pretty well. With a simplistic game design and the basic goal trying to get a new high score each playthrough, Megarace definitely is worth a play for something to unwind with!
